Fossil fuels for breakfast

I was pointed to an interesting write-up called My Saudi Arabian Breakfast. This article is a good read and points out some things to think about when purchasing the food you eat. I buy organic quite often and think it's good for the Earth. However, this article points out that buying organic is not necessarily helping to conserve energy. It points out how the packaging, transportation and processing of these foods consumes energy too. The article is pretty fun to read, here's an excerpt:
Coming from another hemisphere, my raspberries take an even longer fossil-fueled journey to my neighborhood. Though packaged in a plastic bag labeled Cascadian Farms ... the small print on the back, stamped "A Product of Chile," tells all -- and what it speaks of is a 5,800-mile journey to Northern California.

Once again, it's really up to us to find ways to conserve energy and use less fossil-fuels. This article renews my interest in buying locally grown and processed foods.

Interesting. Aside from pesticides, that sounds like another reason not to buy California produce...

That's something people should keep in mind when they buy anything, as consumers we do more damage than anything else, someone who drives their car two and from work every day but consumes in a fairly sustainable way is much less a threat than the consumer with no concept of where things come from.

We live in a part of the world where for the majority of the year we can eat locally, it may seem crazy but once you start thinking about these things during purchase time you'll really appreciate the things you buy alot more. People have become far too detached from the processes imho.

oh yeah

ps, this is related but sorta unrelated, based on what you've been blogging about recently you should check out the deconstructing dinner podcast http://www.cjly.net/deconstructingdinner/

I'm finding more and more that people our age are really starting to pay attention to the health of themselves and the planet these days. We really are the first generation thats actually looking like it will make or break the future of the planet.
