Furnishings

Speedo posted some thoughts on how disposable a lot of our furnishings have become. Much of the time we don't think about where they've come from or where they go when we throw them out. This got me thinking about my current position. Amanda's in school and we still have roomates so that puts us in college mode. Beg, borrow or buy used. I've never been to Ikea and the only new furniture I've ever purchased includes my computer desk from staples, some kitchen chairs at Bed/Bath&B and a desk-chair. Soon however things will change. In September Amanda and I are moving out on our own and we'll be forced to find all the basics... couches, tables and all. It's a scary thought. A lot of people have mentioned Area 51 in Capitol Hill which boasts environmentally friendly furnishings. We'll definitely be looking at alternatives come Fall.

It's not just furnishings.. it's everything. I was ashamed of how much shite I threw away when I moved. I glad I have a smaller place in London now + a semi-nomadic lifestyle, which means I'll hopefully accumulate less useless junk.

I've actually wanted to rant about this for a while. The affluence of the developed world has led to a buy-lots-of-marginally-useful-shit-then-discard-lots-of-marginally-useless-shit lifestyle. Compare that to my grandparents, who have had their same set of 2 wood and cushions couches for more than 40 years. Anyway, I realize I'm just ranting without offering any solutions, so I'll stop. But the last couple of house moves have taught me to think thrice before buying something.
